International norms to regulate the emission of Carbon dioxide are based on the Kyoto protocol.

This protocol was negotiated in December 1997 at Kyoto (Japan) and came into force on Feb 16th, 2005. It is an international treaty that extends the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Kyoto Protocol aims to reduce emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane and other harmful gases in the environment.
